Cool Runnings has always been one of my favourite films and is now also one of my favourite trails at Glentress. Last week the Forestry Commission opened this new trail as a replacement for Pennel's Vennel and it couldn't be more different from the original. Pennel's Vennel was tight, rocky and had a very natural feel. This new trail has big banking berms, a fast rolling surface and has a real bike park vibe to it.
If you've ever ridden berm baby berm and wanted it a bit steeper and with bigger berms the forestry commission have read your mind. The trail starts with a smooth straight before dropping into berms that come one after another, you end up feeling like you're being sucked down a plug hole! Like any good trail it ends far too soon and you'll be doing well to resist heading up for another lap. This is easily done by turning right at the bottom and heading up the fire road by Berm Baby Berm.
It is great to see the continued efforts by the forestry commission and the quality of trails they produce. Hats off to the team. With the Glentress master plan moving through the various phases it is exciting to imagine the new trails to come further down the line. Cool Runnings has whet my appetite and I cant wait for the new trails in the years to come.
Here's a video of Dirt School's Rab Wardell riding Cool Runnings. If you want to learn to ride like this have a look on our tuition page to learn some more about what dirt school do.
Dan, Innerleithen's senior mechanic, and I had a go at the trail last night. We had snow showers and sun that made the surface pretty greasy but it just added to the fun. Dan rode his Remedy 9 and I had a go on our Yeti SB5 demo bike. The bikes were great and we had an awesome evening. Come and say hello if you see us out on the trails and we'll be stoked to share a lap of cool running with you.
